Image of a Nitrogen molecule, N2. Nitrogen makes up most of the air that we breathe. It is an inert diatomic gas (two nitrogen atoms linked by a triple bond). Plants use bacteria to fix nitrogen, which introduces it into biological systems.

NITROGEN: forms the bulk of the atmosphere, comprising nearly four fifths of AIR. Under normal conditions it is a gas. It exists as a molecule of two nitogen atoms joined by a triple bond.

INDUSTRIAL USES OF NITROGEN: nitrogen is hydrogenated to create ammonia and is used in fabrication because it is unreactive.

BIOLOGICAL USES OF NITROGEN: used by plants following fixation by bacteria.
