Hexagonally arranged carbon atoms can form minute (hence nano-) tubes. This graphic a shows a flat graphene layer at bottom, a curved graphene layer in the middle, and a nanotube at the top. Nanotubes are not formed this way but the graphic illustrates the equivalence between graphene and nanotubes.
