Image of Polar or AM Herculis Star System
Polar or AM Herculis System. An M-dwarf star loses material to a super strongly magnetic white dwarf star, forming an accretion stream (pale yellow). Since the magnetic field is so strong the infalling material is funnelled directly to the star without forming an accretion disk. The material crashes near the magnetic pole of the white dwarf causing strong X-ray emissions.
