Volvox: colonial green alga

Image of Volvox, a spherical colonial green alga found in ponds and other freshwater. Its level of organisation is somewhere between a colony and a multicellular organism. This makes it a popular choice for the biology curriculum. Here you can see the many chlamydomonas like cells with their outwardly pointing flagella creating the hollow ball. Inside are daughter colonies waiting to be released.
