Cutaway image of The Sun

Image of our sun cutaway to reveal internal structure. Deep in the middle of the sun (blue) nuclear fusion generates huge amounts of energy which is slowly passed outwards through the (green fading to yellow) radiative zone. The energy reaches the surface by convection (orange). Powerful magnetic fields play across the surface of the sun creating arcing flares and sunspots.
