Coronavirus images, including replication and spread. Coronaviruses cause SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) and the newly emerging Chinese variety from Wuhan city (2019 Novel Coronavirus or 2019-nCoV, now called SARS-CoV-2, and the disease it causes is now called COVID-19). Coronaviruses have a characteristic halo (corona) of spikes and a faceted surface. A mutation called D614GÂ (with many more spikes and far more infectious) has been identified. Many of these graphics show such close packing of the viral spikes, in contrast to the common depictions which show spikes sparsely distributed over a spherical surface.
