UV damage to DNA series light glow
DNA struck by ultraviolet rays (sunburn).
LEFT: UV rays from the sun strike a DNA molecule.
MIDDLE: A pair of adjacent thymine bases (red) on the green strand absorb a UV photon (pale glow).
RIGHT: The two bases bond together (creating a Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimer) which distorts the helix and breaks the link with the complementary bases on the purple strand.
