Ebola Virus

Ebola Virus Pictures: Ebolaviruses are long and thin (filamentous, hence filovirus, family filoviridae) with a helical central core. This core contains the Ebola single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) genome (set of viral genes). There is a matrix protein layer surrounding the core. The matrix lies immediately beneath and is adherent to, the viral envelope (derived from the host cell during budding). On the surface are viral trimeric spikes (glycoproteins) that the virus uses to attach to target cells.

Images include an Ebola Virus Life Cycle (replication), virions from various viewpoints, and detailed cutaway structure illustrations that show the internal anatomy (ultrastructure) of the virus. There are labelled (annotated) cutaway diagrams. These graphics are deeply researched and modelled to scale. They show virions that contain a single genome. The very long worm-like images of Ebola that commonly appear in the media show virus particles that contain multiple copies of the genome.
